This statement belongs to a series of “I am” sayings found only in the Gospel of John. In Greek, Jesus uses the phrase ego eimi—“I am.” John records this phrase eleven times as Jesus says, “I am the good shepherd,” “I am the door,” “I am the way, the truth, and the life,” and more.

When we hear that “the word of God is alive and active,” we often think immediately of the Bible. While Scripture is indeed God’s Word recorded for us, the Word of God is ultimately God speaking—His voice throughout history. And most fully, the Word of God is Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh.

Peter does not deny these realities. Instead, he reminds Christians where their confidence lies.

James is a uniquely powerful voice in Scripture. As the brother of Jesus, he had seen firsthand what it looked like to live out the values of God’s kingdom. His letter is deeply practical, calling believers to active, obedient faith.

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” — 2 Timothy

The psalmist declares that the Lord is good because He is not like the false gods of the nations. Yahweh is the God of the patriarchs—Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob—the God of promises, covenants, and faithfulness. He does not bully or exploit His people. He loves them.

The Greek word used for grace is charis, which means gift or endowment. Grace is not a reward for good behavior or religious effort. It is something God gives in response to faith. We trust God, confess our sins, and receive what we could never achieve on our own.

The Pharisees approach Jesus with a question meant to trap Him: “What is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Rather than falling into their scheme, Jesus offers a deeply rich and layered answer. He begins by quoting Deuteronomy 6:5,

Before the manger came the miracle: God Himself entering human history.
