Faith Lesson from John 15:5: I Am the Vine

Scripture:“I am the vine; you are the branches.” — John 15:5

Today’s Faith Lesson comes from John 15:5, where Jesus makes one of His most profound declarations: “I am the vine.”

This statement belongs to a series of “I am” sayings found only in the Gospel of John. In Greek, Jesus uses the phrase ego eimi—“I am.” John records this phrase eleven times as Jesus says, “I am the good shepherd,” “I am the door,” “I am the way, the truth, and the life,” and more.

This language is intentional. It reaches back to Exodus 3:14, when God revealed His name to Moses: “I Am who I Am.” When Jesus uses this phrase, the Pharisees immediately recognize it as a claim of divinity. This is what theologians call high Christology—Jesus revealing the fullest view of His divine identity.

Yet Jesus also reveals His humanity and closeness. He does not describe Himself as distant or unreachable. He describes Himself as a vine, and us as branches. Life flows through the connection. Fruit grows naturally when the branch remains attached.

John’s Gospel uniquely preserves these statements, offering us a deeper look into how Jesus understood His own identity. When we remain in Him, trusting and abiding, our lives produce fruit—not through effort alone, but through relationship.

This Faith Lesson invites us to stay connected to Christ, the true vine, and allow His life to flow through us.
