Scripture:“Cast all your anxiety on him, because he cares for you.” — 1 Peter 5:7
Today’s Faith Lesson comes from 1 Peter 5:7, a verse that offers deep reassurance in anxious times. When Peter wrote these words in the first century, they carried tremendous weight. Most people in the Roman world had little reason to believe that anyone in power truly cared for them. Governments were oppressive, unpredictable, and often violent. The gods of the Roman world were feared, not trusted. People tried desperately to appease them, hoping to avoid harm.
Into that world, Peter speaks a radically different message.
He tells believers that they do not need to carry their anxieties alone. They can cast them onto God—because God actually cares.
Life in the Roman Empire gave people plenty to worry about. Food and clothing were never guaranteed. Safety was uncertain. And for Christians, the situation was especially dangerous. When Peter likely wrote this letter in the 50s or early 60s AD, the Roman emperor was Nero, who would soon scapegoat Christians and blame them for the great fire of Rome in AD 64. Many believers faced persecution, marginalization, and fear.
Peter does not deny these realities. Instead, he reminds Christians where their confidence lies. God is not like the rulers of this world. He is not distant or cruel. He is attentive, loving, and sovereign. He knows His people. He knows their names. And He invites them to release their fears into His care.
This Faith Lesson reminds us that the same truth applies today. Even in troubled times, God remains on His throne. He sees us, He knows us, and He cares deeply for us.
When anxiety weighs heavy, Scripture invites us to trust the God who loves us enough to carry our burdens.
