Scripture:“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.” — Galatians 5:22–23

Today’s Faith Lesson comes from Galatians 5:22–23, where the apostle Paul describes what genuine spiritual life looks like.

Just a few verses earlier, Paul lists the works of the flesh—envy, strife, jealousy, and other destructive behaviors that were common in the pagan world of his time. These attitudes fractured relationships and communities, just as they still do today.

In contrast, Paul presents the fruit of the Spirit.

The Spirit of God produces love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. These are not behaviors we manufacture through willpower alone. They are the natural outcome of a life shaped and guided by the Spirit of God.

Paul reminds us that against these things there is no law. A society marked by the fruit of the Spirit would have no need for coercion or punishment. Where love, peace, and self-control abound, strife and violence disappear.

Jesus taught that a tree is known by the fruit it produces. Paul builds on that teaching here. A life governed by the flesh produces destructive fruit, but a life led by the Spirit produces goodness and peace.

This passage challenges us to rethink how we measure spirituality. It is not defined by how much we know, how many verses we can quote, or how impressive we appear. The true test is simple: Is the fruit of the Spirit present?

Where the Spirit is at work, love grows. And where love grows, true faith is evident.
