Scripture:“For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.” — Psalm 100:5

Today’s Faith Lesson comes from Psalm 100:5, a short but powerful declaration: “The Lord is good.”

To fully appreciate this statement, we need to understand its original context. Psalm 100 was written in the ancient Near East, a world where most people had little reason to trust the gods they worshiped. Pagan gods were often seen as vindictive, fickle, and unpredictable. People feared them, pleaded with them, and hoped they might show mercy—but there was no assurance of love or care.

Yahweh, the God of Israel, stands in stark contrast.

The psalmist declares that the Lord is good because He is not like the false gods of the nations. Yahweh is the God of the patriarchs—Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob—the God of promises, covenants, and faithfulness. He does not bully or exploit His people. He loves them.

Psalm 100 uses the imagery of shepherd and sheep to describe this relationship. The psalmist reminds us that we are the sheep of God’s pasture. A shepherd cares for his flock. He protects them, leads them to green pastures, provides water, and watches over them with patience and love.

That is who the Lord is.

Because Yahweh is good, we are invited to trust Him. Because He loves His people, we can draw near without fear. Psalm 100:5 reassures us that God’s goodness is not temporary or uncertain—it is enduring, faithful, and reliable.

This Faith Lesson encourages us to rest in the truth that the Lord is good. He loves His people, and He always will.
