Just a few verses earlier, Paul lists the works of the flesh—envy, strife, jealousy, and other destructive behaviors that were common in the pagan world of his time. These attitudes fractured relationships and communities, just as they still do today.

This statement belongs to a series of “I am” sayings found only in the Gospel of John. In Greek, Jesus uses the phrase ego eimi—“I am.” John records this phrase eleven times as Jesus says, “I am the good shepherd,” “I am the door,” “I am the way, the truth, and the life,” and more.
