After eight chapters of explaining the gospel, the apostle Paul reaches a powerful conclusion: nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus. This assurance was not spoken in a vacuum. Paul was writing to believers living in a hostile world.

This statement belongs to a series of “I am” sayings found only in the Gospel of John. In Greek, Jesus uses the phrase ego eimi—“I am.” John records this phrase eleven times as Jesus says, “I am the good shepherd,” “I am the door,” “I am the way, the truth, and the life,” and more.

When we hear that “the word of God is alive and active,” we often think immediately of the Bible. While Scripture is indeed God’s Word recorded for us, the Word of God is ultimately God speaking—His voice throughout history. And most fully, the Word of God is Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh.
